Install Microsoft SQL Server

We recommend running Microsoft SQL Server™ on a dedicated server. This server should be a domain member server.

WARNING: Attempting to run SQL Server on a domain controller is strongly discouraged by Microsoft and Cyncly because of security issues and is not supported for running SQL Server Reporting Services.

NOTES: These instructions assume no other SQL Server instances are installed on this server.

We recommend using the Microsoft® SQL Server® Best Practices Analyzer, which is readily available on the Internet.

Prepare the Windows Server

Before attempting to install SQL Server, download and apply all current Microsoft Windows operating system service packs and critical updates. In addition, review and apply all applicable OEM and/or Microsoft supplied drivers. It is important to ensure that your hardware and OS are stable.
The account under which this installation is attempted must have administrative rights.

Installation highlights for SQL Server

If you want SQL to access network resources, create and use a domain user account instead of the built-in System account for the Service Account. Using a domain user account allows SQL to directly access a network location when performing a database backup or restore.

Please refer to Microsoft SQL Server documentation for more information about installing SQL Server.

Install SQL Server latest service pack and cumulative updates

Download and apply the latest SQL Server Service Packs plus the cumulative update from the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads.
